About the Orchestra :
The Qatar Philharmonic Orchestra (QPO) is the flagship orchestra for the State of Qatar and the leading professional ensemble in the Middle East. The QPO is part of Qatar Foundation – chaired by Her Highness Sheikha Mozah bint Nasser Al Missned – and gave its inaugural performance at the National Theatre Doha in October 2008.
The initial search in 2007/08 for outstanding musicians involved a Europe-wide (with Cairo) audition tour, resulting in the creation of a full-time 101-member symphony orchestra, made up of musicians from 31 nations.
From September 2011 Michalis Economou is appointed to the post of Music Director. Mr Economou is also the permanent conductor for the Athens Symphony Orchestra and takes over from Nader Abassi who has been working with the QPO as Chief Conductor since 2009 .
Other conductors who have worked with the QPO include Lorin Maazel, Dmitri Kitajenko, Gerd Albrecht, Marc Minowski and James Gaffigan. Soloists who have appeared with the Orchestra recently include violinist Kolja Blacher, cellist Wenn-sin Yang, pianists Gerhard Oppitz; Rudolf Buchbinder and Marcel Khalife, Oud.
From Bach to The Beatles, the QPO’s artistic profile encompasses not only the masterworks of the classical repertoire, but also innovative cross-artform projects as it seeks to build bridges between the Arabian-European musical traditions. This unique blend of genres is included in over 60 symphonic, operatic and collaborative concerts each season.
Apart from its annual chamber music festival, the Orchestra also part-takes in leading edge media initiatives, such as the Doha Tribecca Film Festival and serves its local community with an extraordinarily versatile education and community out-reach performance program.
Touring looms large in the Orchestra’s activities. Thus far, the Syrian Opera House (Damascus), Royal Albert Hall (London), Teatro alla Scala (Milan), Théâtre des Champs-Élysées (Paris), Wiener Konzerthaus (Vienna) and the Kennedy Centre (Washington D.C.) have been hosts to guest-performances by the Qatar Philharmonic.
Resident in the new Opera House in Doha’s Cultural Village, the QPO continues to set high standards in orchestral performance and shape the artistic life of Doha, Qatar and the Arabian Gulf.
As part of its commitment to musical education, members of the Orchestra also serve as faculty in the Qatar Foundation Music Academy, thereby sharing the principle belief of Qatar Foundation -that a nation’s greatest resource is the potential of its people.
