Beirut Chants, The 5th Festival of sacred music from 1 till 25 December 2012.

For five weeks of events during each year-end, we welcome performers from all over the world, both established and emerging, to share the festive spirit in the many beautiful and historic Churches of the heart of Beirut.

This year’s festival will host performances as diverse as recitative, sacred choral music, chamber and philharmonic orchestra performance, this 2012 programme offers a rich tapestry of vocal and instrumental music that will entertain challenge and stimulate our audience. Free to all

This year’s Beirut Chants kicks off in a grand fashion with La Scala di Milano. The sextet of the Academia of Teatro alla scala di Milano brings together six of the most talented musician of La Scala Orchestra who will perform, for the very first time in Beirut, a wide repertoire from Boccherini, Verdi, Mascagni, and Strauss’ “capriccio”. This event is in collaboration with the Italian cultural Institute. Come share in this unique occasion and experience Italy in the heart of Beirut.

Musique sacrée d’une intensité remarquable, à la fois simple et pure, les pages composées par Boësset, sur des poèmes sacrés relatifs à l’Annonce faite à Marie par Gabriel, ont probablement été composées pour les demoiselles et les religieuses de l’Abbaye de Montmartre, vers 1630. La musique est bouleversante et invite les auditeurs à s’élever hors des troubles du monde pour goûter des moments d’extase musicale et poétique.

Joumana is considered one of the most popular Lebanese religious singers. With an average of 50 concerts per year, she has performed in Europe, USA, Africa, Australia and the Arab World. Her light vocal weight brings out the best in her interpretative art. Her voice is particularly associated with the music of Joseph Khalifé, who composed her best repertoir. This year Joumana will perform with the Beirut Chants chamber orchestra for a premiere created especially for the Beirut Chants festival.

St. Stephanos the Melode Choir will perform during this year’s Beirut Chants festival, celebrating hope and praising God, through traditional Byzantine chants that will raise hearts and sights to the eternal light of the Lord.

The program of this concert involves both classical pieces, related to the Advent, and traditional Christmas carols. The goal is to provide the audience with the treasures of the classical music within the joy and happiness of God’s gift to the humanity. The pieces are mostly accompanied by the piano and are sung in three different languages Latin, Armenian and English. The concert duration is one hour without an intermission. The interplay between the instrumental music and the choir will create a beautiful atmosphere full of melodies and timbres.

SCHOOL OF ECCLESIASTIC MUSIC (SEM) in THIS IS OUR GOD at ST GEORGES ORTHODOX CATHEDRAL on Friday December 14 | 20:00
This year’s SEM concert, in the context of the 5th Beirut Chants Festival of Sacred Music, will feature a world premiere Byzantine Oratorio for the Nativity, the first of its kind in Byzantine music, inspired from the liturgical dialogue of the Virgin Mary and the angel Gabriel on the day of the Annunciation. Special guest Fotis Ketsetzis will be the hosted Protpsaltis of the Oratorio.
The text of the Oratorio is a compilation done by Jospeh Yazbeck comprised of centennial texts arranged to form several dialogues between the Virgin Mary, Jesus, the Magi and St. Jospeh, pertaining specifically to the Nativity. The aim was to breathe new life into these texts making them accessible audiences while maintain the texts original meaning and deep spiritual connotations.
Musically this translated into a composition true to the Byzantine ecclesiastic musical tradition, with melodic continuity and solo alternations representing the different characters, forming a complete musical scene of the Nativity.

GHADA CHBEIR & IMANE HOMSI in WATAR WA SAWT at ST ELIE KANTARI on Saturday December 15 | 20:00
This years’ appearance of Ghada Shbeir and Iman Homsi will be as a duo, performing Syriac chants from « الفنقيت » and the Maronite repertoire. The « الفنقيت » is as Syriac word signifying volume. It is composed of eight volumes, each pertaining to a particular time in the liturgical year. The volumes contain Sunday mass and festivities prayers filled with beautiful chants, some dating back to the first centuries of Christianity and containing a richness of Syriac hymns, most of which were lost, while some survived and are still heard in churches to this day.
Ghada Shbeir’s research into these volumes has yielded a musical program comprised of five sections, which are accompanied on the Qanoun by Mrs. Imane Homsi.

VIVA VERDI! in VIVA VERDI! at ST GEORGES MARONITE CATHEDRAL on Sunday December 16 | 20:00
December 2012 Coinciding nicely with the start bicentenary of the birth of the Italian composer Giuseppe Verdi, and the closing centenary of the French composer Jules Massenet, the festival will present some of their greatest works, including arias sang by Lebanese International Soprano Rima Tawil and famous choruses from Aida, Nabucco and Trovatore, joining the Antonine University and the Notre Dame University choirs will be accompanied by the Lebanese Philharmonic Orchestra and conducted by Manfred Müssauer.

ABEER NEHME in CHOUBHO LHAO QOLO at ST ELIE KANTARI on Monday December 17 | 20:00
In her performance, Abeer Nehme is bringing to the festival a new form of Syriac music, which is developed according to a theoretical model, followed by other traditions of sacred music that had evolved in imperial societies. The performance will be a world premiere that will take place for the first time in Beirut Chants this year.

NDU CHILDREN’S CHOIR at ST LOUIS CAPUCHIN CHURCH on Tuesday December 18 | 20:00
The NDU Children Choir will be performing the Missa Dei Genetricis Mariae of Valentino Miserachs, in addition to several Christmas canticles and carols from César Franck and others. A chamber orchestra will be accompanying the children choir, in addition to several appearances of the Adult Male Choir during the concert.

Assawt Al Atiq Choir gained its importance from the quality of its interpretation in worshiping God. For this performance, they will play a bouquet of the Maronite Christmas sacred traditional hymns in Syriac and Arabic.

“La Chanterie de Beyrouth” is a choir composed of 20 children, (between 6 and 13 yearsold) from different schools, bound by their love for singing.
Under the direction of Noha Hatem, the children will perform a selection of classical Christmas songs, in addition to many carols from around the world, in french, English, Arabic and Spanish.

World renowned French-Lebanese soprano Rima Tawil is once again in Beirut, where she will be closing this year’s Beirut Chants Festival with a bouquet of arias and melodies, and signing her two latest CD releases interpreting works by Jules Massenet. Accompanying her is the exceptional Jeff Cohen on the piano and the talented Carine Balit on the cello.
