Baalbeck International Festival 2014
Baalbeck International Festival 2014 at Baalbeck – Lebanon
The official program:
– Assi El Helani / Assi…Al Helm // July 30th & August 1st
– Angela Gheorghiu / Recital // August 3rd
First revealed to the world in 1994 in the George Solti-directed La Traviata, the Romanian soprano Angela Gheorghiu quickly became renowned for her extraordinary voice, her sensual resonance, her exceptional diction and her unbounded palette of nuance. Her starring performances in Puccini and Verdi’s great soprano roles as well as her heart-stopping, heart-rending interpretation of Adriana Lecouvreur, have placed her firmly among the constellation of the leading opera stars of our time. The Baalbeck Festival is proud to present this diva, whom the New York Sun recently dubbed “The World’s Most Glamorous Opera Star”.
– Dhafer Youssef (page officielle) / Birds Requiem, Oriental Jazz Septet // August 10
Delicately navigating the strings of his magical oud like a tightrope walker, the celebrated Tunisian musician Dhafer Youssef and his inimitable voice are back, this time in Baalbeck, with a concert evocatively entitled “Incantations – Birds Requiem”. His ethereal melodies will be accompanied by a troupe of exceptional musicians, including a very special guest, the Turkish clarinetist Hüsnü Senlendirici, performing in Lebanon for the very first time. Dhafer Youssef takes us on a meditative, feverish journey to a parallel world.
– Les 7 doigts de la main / Sequence 8 // August 16
The Canadian circus company Les 7 doigts de la main is well known for its acrobatic shows and human performances, enriched with meticulous choreography, theatricality and musicality. Their exceptional acrobatics were showcased to hundreds of millions of spectators during the three opening ceremonies of the Olympic Games in Turin, Vancouver, and most recently, Sochi. Their latest show, “Séquence 8,” debuted in 2012 at the Festival des Nuits de Fourvière in Lyon and has met with the astounded applause of some 200,000 theatergoers around the world. “Séquence 8” is an invitation to an encounter with the Other, a magical and interactive experience that seduces young and old alike.
– Gerard Depardieu & Fanny Ardant / La Musica Deuxieme, a play by Marguerite Duras // August 31st
Gérard Depardieu and Fanny Ardant, two giants of French cinema, lend their talents to the devastating text by Marguerite Duras, “La Musica deuxième”. A woman. A man. They fall in love and come together, marrying, in order to “be like everyone else”… before they fall apart. The Baalbeck Festival is proud to have been able to accommodate the request of Gérard Depardieu and Fanny Ardant to come to Lebanon, to perform together one of Marguerite Duras’ most haunting and moving texts during this year in which we celebrate the centenary of her birth.
